our Priorities

At SGO, we want to prioritize certain realities we believe are non-negotiable to the life of a healthy, biblical church. These priorities serve two functions in our church: aspirational and protective. They are aspirational in that we want to pursue them and orbit our lives around them. But they are also protective in that they set the guardrails for our ministry efforts and guard us against being shaped by unhealthy and/or unbiblical ideas.

The Gospel
The Gospel is the good news that Jesus has come to save us from our sins. The gospel is the reason we are followers of Christ. It is not another message of self-help or behavior modification. Instead, it is the life-changing, soul-saving power of God to redeem us from sin and restore us to a relationship with God. If we lose this, we lose everything.

Christ-Centered Community
Human relationships and communities come in many forms, but Christ-centered community entails a commitment to love one another because Christ has loved us. church membership is a loving commitment that entails sacrificial compassion and intentional involvement. This is true regardless of age, race, gender, political party, etc. In Christ, none of these realities are ultimate or defining. Instead, our unity in Christ draws us together and implores us to love one another as the body of Christ.

Deep Discipleship
At SGO, we don’t our relationships with Jesus and each other to be shallow and superficial. Instead, we want them to be deliberate and deep. As such, we will prioritize theological development and engagement with the relevant issues of our day. We will also prioritize the hard commands of Scripture that call us to forgive, repent, and serve one another. Together, we want to grow into mature disciples of Jesus.

Biblical Teaching
The Bible is our ultimate authority by which we interpret, evaluate, and respond to everyday life. As such, we will always teach from the Bible and seek to apply its truth, correction, and wisdom to the situations that face us. If the Bible is not our ultimate authority, then something else will be. At SGO, we want to build everything around the solid foundation of God’s Word.

Passionate Worship
At SGO, we believe Jesus is worthy. He is worthy of all our praise and devotion. As such, we will sing songs to Him every Sunday and we will do so with boldness, desperation, and surrender. Our hearts were made to worship. But it’s only when we worship Jesus that our hearts are filled with His love.

The Next Generation
If one generation assumes the gospel, then the next generation abandons the gospel. We don’t want to be either: we want to be explicit and intentional in telling our children about Jesus. As such, we will pour our time and resources into both partnering with families and serving the next generation.

Intercessory Prayer
God is sovereign and prayer matters. The Bible affirms both realities and so will we. We are a church built on prayer and audacious faith. As such, we will spend a lot of time in prayer: privately, interpersonally, and corporately. This means that we want to pray with you—about anything—and want to invite you to pray with us.

Deliberate Simplicity
If you’re looking for a church with a long menu of programs, then SGO may disappoint you. While we will offer various programs throughout the year, we don’t want to turn the church into an event center and add more clutter to our already busy schedules. Instead, we will stick to the basics, keep things simple, and strive to do all of this with excellence.

Community Partnership
As the body of Christ, we believe it’s vital that we serve our community. Throughout the year, we will partner with various organizations to meet specific needs and address real concerns. Our God is a God of mercy, justice, and compassion. As His people, we believe we should be as well.
