At SGO, we believe Jesus has already given the church its mission. Our goal is to articulate and obey this mission within our current generation. Put simply, the mission of the church is to Love God, Love People, and Make Disciples. We get this from two primary places in Scripture: Matthew 22:34–40 and Matthew 28:18–20. In the first passage, Matthew tells us:
When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they came together. 35 And one of them, an expert in the law, asked a question to test him: 36 “Teacher, which command in the law is the greatest?”
37 He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the greatest and most important command. 39 The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. 40 All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.” — Matthew 22:34–40
Jesus makes it clear that God’s primary agenda for our lives is to love Him with all our lives and to love our neighbor as ourselves. All of the Christian life should be aimed at these two ends. One expression of this is in our commitment to make disciples of Jesus. After His triumphant resurrection, Jesus called His disciples together and said:
“All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” — Matthew 28:18–20
As a church family, we believe these two verses should define and characterize everything we do. There are a variety of ways we would do this through various initiatives, projects, and programs. But at the core of who we are, we want to be a church that genuinely Loves God, Loves People, and Makes Disciples.
